Observation of topological action potentials in engineered tissues

چکیده
The interface between two tissues can have very different bioelectrical properties compared to either tissue on its own. Here we show that an non-excitable be electrically excitable because of interaction the currents passing through gap junctions—electrically resistive intercellular connections—and non-linear current–voltage dependence in ion channels side interface. Our theory shows this topologically robust excitability occurs over a far larger range channel expression levels than support bulk. corresponding interfacial action potentials cause local elevations calcium concentration, possibly providing mechanism for sensing. observed topological point possibility other types effect electrophysiology and at diffusively coupled interfaces. Membrane Potentials and Action Potentials
Electrical potentials exist across the membranes of virtually all cells of the body. In addition, some cells, such as nerve and muscle cells, are capable of generating rapidly changing electrochemical impulses at their membranes, and these impulses are used to transmit signals along the nerve or muscle membranes. In other types of cells, such as glandular cells, macrophages, and ciliated cells,...
متن کاملDesign standards for engineered tissues.
Traditional technologies are required to meet specific, quantitative standards of safety and performance. In tissue engineering, similar standards will have to be developed to enable routine clinical use and customized tissue fabrication. In this essay, we discuss a framework of concepts leading towards general design standards for tissue-engineering, focusing in particular on systematic design...
متن کاملBiomaterials to prevascularize engineered tissues.
Tissue engineering promises to restore tissue and organ function following injury or failure by creating functional and transplantable artificial tissues. The development of artificial tissues with dimensions that exceed the diffusion limit (1-2 mm) will require nutrients and oxygen to be delivered via perfusion (or convection) rather than diffusion alone. One strategy of perfusion is to prevas...
متن کاملEngineered quantum tunnelling in extended periodic potentials
Quantum tunnelling from a tilted, but otherwise periodic potential is studied. Our theoretical and experimental results show that, by controlling the system’s parameters, we can engineer the escape rate of a Bose-Einstein condensate to an exceptional degree. Possible applications of this atom-optics realization of the open Wannier-Stark system are discussed.
متن کاملModeling and numerical simulation of action potentials in human atrial tissues
Electrophysiology of the heart is the subject of a vast interdisciplinary literature, from medical sciences through bio-engineering, physiology, chemistry and physics. The difficulty in having access to direct measures on real patients entailed the coupling of such studies with numerical simulations. Several works have been done on this topic, focusing mainly on the behavior of the ventricles. ...
